I’ve always been painting but never thought it was “art” – it just made me feel good. One day, about 2 years ago, I was stuck inside after having surgery and thought I would just paint something to pass the time. It ended up being one of my favorite paintings. If my house were on fire, I would grab it – after making sure my pups are out safely, of course.
2. Why did you choose your particular medium?
It was all I had in the house – acrylic craft paints and cheap-o canvas. I like experimenting with oil paints, watercolors…but there’s something “silly” about using craft paints. I like silly.
3. What do you consider your greatest achievement?
It’s still in the works – leaving my 9 – 5, lucrative job for what I love: teaching people how to work with their dogs as a dog trainer. Being able to sell my paintings would be the icing on the cake.
4. What awards have you won?
The people I’ve painted for love the work enough to hang it up in their homes.
5. How does your work translate over to your life?
With every single painting, I go through this “it’s not good enough” phase. I get really down on what I’m creating. My fiancé always tells me, “Put the brush down and step back.” I’m amazed at how well that speaks to my life. Whenever I’m overwhelmed or disappointed or not where I think I should be in life, I try to remind myself to “step back from the painting”.
6. Describe something interesting about your art.
My favorite part about my paintings is the lack of eyes in the dogs. I know, it sounds strange. When you look at a close-up of a dog, their eyes are spilling over with their souls, so I can understand how strange it is that I don’t paint them. But when someone looks at their dog on the canvas, I want them to see everything else that tells them “this is my dog”. I try to make those other characteristics speak to the viewer, like pieces of stray hair that always stick up or an ear that folds a funny way.
