Split Toning Photographs
Split Toning PhotographsÂ
This weeks Dogwood 52 photo challenge is Technical-Split Tone. I have used split toning a little bit, mostly from Lightroom presets that I have downloaded along the way. But I wanted to learn a little more about split toning photographs, and experiment with the technique. One good thing about this Dogwood challenge is there is a chatter group on facebook were people talk about the challenges for the week. I learned some stuff from peoples comments, plus did some googling, and then experimenting.
This photo of Torrey at sunset ended up being my submission for this week.
This screen capture shows the before, and after plus the split tone values used.
Split toning can be very helpful to help along a bland sunset sky.
The big trick to split tone is to use a different color for the highlights, and the shadows. In a sunset shot, this can be tricky. You can see in the screen shot that my two colors are similar. I played around with different color combinations, but nothing looked quite right.
This split tone shot has more color variation than the top photos.
After split toning.
As you can see in this shot, the tones used in this image are different than the first, and give the photo a whole different look and feel.
Skies are good for split toning, but don’t limit yourself to just that. This rock outcropping was shot backlit, and when I applied split toning, it changed it completely.
One more sunset shot. This was a pretty great sunset to start with, but I love how the split toning brought out the mountain ranges in the bottom of the photo.
This is the original.
I hope this gives you some ideas, or at the very least something new to play around with.
My other photo challenge shots this week are…….
2LilOwls-Pick a color. I chose white.

Never heard of split toning, but it does make for interesting photos!
I had never heard of it either, but it is interesting how the tones can really make different things stand out so much more. Great job on all your challenges this week!
I have not had the time to really play with my photos; the choices out there to enhance reality are mind-boggling! Lovely interpretation of the desert, Mary!
I had never heard of split toning, either; but my photography skills only stretch as far as my camera’s auto settings will take me. LOL
Seriously, though, I love all your photos. They always take me to a place where I can almost feel the earth breathe beneath my feet, or the sun warming my face, or …..
