ABFriday and Top 10 photos
ABFriday and Top 10 photos
Today is my first time in participating in a photo challenge I found about a month ago. After-Before Friday is hosted by Stacy at Visual Venturing. The idea behind the challenge is to show a photo before, and after editing. The first Friday of each month is One photo focus, where all participants are editing the same photo.
This is my edited version of the photo we were sent this week.
And the original.
I knew right away what I wanted to do with this photo in Lightroom. I love the vintage trucks, and the yellow one really stands out to me. So I desaturated the whole image by about 80%. I then popped out the yellow and green. I gave the image a vignette effect to give it more of that old time look, and bumped up the clarity.

Today is also the See Beautiful blog hop. and you know I love that.
But today I am doing it a bit different. Rather than taking new photos of beautiful things, I am doing an exercise I found on ImprovePhotography.com. The writer suggested that a good way to start the New Year is to go through and pick your 10 favorite photos. Place those photos in a separate file, and share them with your readers, or facebook, or whatever. Then take the next year to improve your photography skills so that those 10 photos are just…meh. In going through my past images, these are what stood out for me. They are beautiful. But I am sure I can improve, and get images even more beautiful in 2015.
So in no particular order, just some nice shots from 2014.
Join the See Beautiful bloghop today.
Great recap of last year, Mary. Like what you did to the trucks too!…:)JP
Awesome ten photos! I tend to lean towards the animals as my favorite photos. The shot of the horses is just beautiful. Have a happy weekend!
OH MARY, I could own a book from you, I truly could. I SIGH when I see your work. LIGHTROOM….hmmmm, sounds good! I have Photoshop, and the difference it makes! Those horses, Oh give me a horse, please. Much love and have a great day. Anita
I like how you’ve improved the first photo! Very nice. And I love the idea of chosing 10 photos from last year and improving my skills to make them seem “meh.” I’m going to check both sites out and thank you for sharing them!
Lovely processing on the first picture!
And I think a few of those photos you chose are going to be pretty tough to make seem meh by the end of the year!
You know we think you take Beautiful photos! If you get any better, we will surely be jealous! LOL Some of those 10 photos were some of our favorites from 2014. Keep up the great work so we can live vicariously through your photos.

great photos. We have a lot in common. Sam and vintage trucks. I love to take photos also but not very good at it. Did I read a past post or dream it about music to pictures you were doing? Maybe I dreamed it.
first, LOVE your edit on the trucks! well done! second, the mailbox babies are precious! love the horse herd. the bison scenes are impressive!
Love the photo with the moon phases! *wags* – Gilligan from WagsAhoy.com
Wow — fascinating to see and learn about your process from the before to after.
and your 10 photos are fabulous. I particularly like the horses and buffalo.
You take so many great shots, I don’t know how you narrowed it to just 10!
A wonderful collection! Love all the animal and butterfly pics. The trucks are pretty neat too! There is so much to photograph in the world!
Just beautiful photos, Love it the horse photo … awesome shot. Happy Seeing Beauty. Golden Woofs
I find it hard to believe you can improve on your top ten photos. But I guess we can always get better if we just keep learning.
I can’t wait to see your top 10 list in 2016.
I love what you did with the trucks, but tell me, where were you standing while those horses were charging straight at you? What a great shot!
Thanks. I was in front of them. I have several shots actually. I was in Wyoming
Wow! I am in love with all of these photos. I especially loved the yellow truck. One of my New Year’s goals is to improve my photo editing, so I may follow along!
All your photography is so amazing, Mary. My husband is going to LOVE the one of the vintage trucks!
I am really impressed with those ten photos! They are going to be hard to top. I also really like the picture with the horses.
Gorgeous photos! I love the moon progression shot.

Ya know, if I had to buy a ‘new’ vehicle, right now, I’d choose an old, restored pickup truck, this one’s right up my alley. You have your work cut out for you, the 2014 photos are beautiful.
Those are beautiful images! I think that I love the one of the Tetons (?) the best, with the horses a close second.
I sort of do the same thing because I make calendars of my favorite photos each year. I have definitely seen them improving from year to year.
Hi Y’all!
Love those photos. My Human has never had time to learn how to edit photos. Whatever she snaps is what you see. If the setting on the camera is wrong…too bad.
Y’all come on by,
Hawk aka BrownDog
Hey Mary, I came > < that close to doing almost the same process as yours :) Putting the focus on the front yellow truck was something I played around with a couple of variations but I couldn't quite get it to do what I wanted to. So glad someone else hit the home run with that one!
And your 10 images are quite lovely and nothing meh about them at all!
Your photos are like visual food for the eyes Mary. I love your 10, they are really good. I can’t wait to see what your pics this year, especially if they make me go MEH! Is that even possible? I may have to do that too now. Great idea.
I also love the idea of everyone getting the same photo and editing it. I love what you did. I have to go see what others did. I may need to join you on that one too! LOL!
I forgot to say that the moose and the Tetons and the moon shot are my favorite All of them are really, really good, but those made me sigh.
I like your post processing and a lot of great shots from 2014. The moose, the horses, the bison. Wow! Great stuff.
I don’t know, I think you’re going to have a tough time improving on those photos! LOL. But I sure look forward to seeing how you do it!
I love what you did with the truck photo….you really made that yellow one stand out and just gave the whole photo so much more “oomph” (for lack of a better word…)
I loved how you post processed the truck (and thanks for stopping by my blog too). I’ve always liked the effect of black and white with just a little color on the main focal point. I didn’t even think of it for this one though!

Mary, what a great treatment of Emilio’s trucks! I love your choice in how you focused attention on the yellow truck. And the vintage feel is spot on for this scene. Thanks so much for participating in One Photo Focus. I hope posting on Friday didn’t mess your schedule up too much! As for your ten pictures, wow! I can see why they’re your favorites. I especially the horses – so much incredible action. You’ve set the bar high for yourself :)
The photography is beautiful!!! What kind of camera do you use? I’ve been wanting to upgrade mine. :-)
I have a Nikon d7100. Love it!
