Artsy Fartsy Tuesday 12/20/11-Marilyn Sunderland
Today’s Artsy Fartsy artist is Marilyn Sunderland. Marilyn is a gourd artist in the finest sense of the word. She took lessons from Mary Hogue, who was actually my very first Artsy Fartsy artist. Marilyn is a fantastic carver, and what she does with a simple gourd is amazing. She is also a member of the WARA and brought some very nice pieces to the show in November.
Marilyn sent me some information about herself, and her art.
My name is Marilyn Sunderland. I was born and raised in Columbia,Missouri, but I have lived in Utah for over 30 years. I live in Riverton,Utah, a city south of SaltLake, which strives to stay country. The valley is surrounded by beautiful mountains. I get a lot of my inspiration from the mountain areas, filled with beautiful foliage in the fall. Art has always been a part of my life. I have painted portraits, landscapes, and various other subjects with oils, acrylics, and pen/ink mediums. I also do wood carving and glass engravings.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Art from the University of Missouri, plus I completed a 2 year art course from the Art Instructions Inc. of Minneapolis. I have acquired carving certificates for classes completed in gourd and creative wood carving.
At present, I have put all my efforts in engraving on glass, wood and gourds. I love the relief effects of the carving and I enhance the carvings with my painting. I have won several awards on my gourd carvings from the Utah Valley Wood Sculpture Show and the Wood Carvers Show & Competition in the past several years.

Ohhhh myyy these are exquisite and so unique!
The warm colors and the attention to detail is just amazing!
The one with the rooster on it should be in Kauai where roosters reign supreme!
Wow! Marylyn is very, very talented!
You guys should see these in person, AMAZING!
Wow! Those are gorgeous!!! I can’t decide which is my favorite. I’m not a fan of fish in art, but I love the colors of that first one. The horse one is more to my liking, but I love that dragonfly one too.
