Artsy Fartsy Tuesday 2/28/12-Mary Ann Cherry
Today’s Artsy Fartsy artist is Mary Ann Cherry. I saw Mary Ann’s work at the Western Art rodeo, and I loved it. She works in pastels so the colors are soft and inviting. Her subjects range from animals to Native American people.
Mary Ann has been a guest artist at several art museums, including the Clymer, the Art Museum of Eastern Idaho and the Olaf Wieghorst Museum of El Cajon,California. Recently, a cultural center in France, Les Amis de la Grande Vigne, invited her to spend a month as their artist in residence. Cherry will live in a rock cottage, paint in the medieval village of Dinan, and haul her plein air easel along the coast of Brittany.
In 2007 in Prescott, Arizona, Cherry swept the Phippen Museum’s National Juried Western Art Show by winning Best of Show, the Founders’ Award, and Best Pastel during the same show, awards chosen by different jury committees. One of her paintings is in the Phippen Museum’s permanent collection. In her own stomping grounds, Idaho, Cherry won the first statewide park’s competition, “Idaho Paints Idaho”, and has won several regional awards in this competition as well as numerous awards in other competitions across the United States.
An article on Cherry’s work will appear in the spring/summer issue of Big Sky Journal Magazine. Three of her paintings will also be featured in an upcoming book on worldwide wildlife painters.
