Artsy Fartsy Tuesday 8/23/11-Lanny Hathaway
Today’s Artsy Fartsy artist is Lanny Hathaway. Lanny lives a couple towns over, and is a friend of ours. He’s a very talented wood worker and I love his designs. His work is very organic, and reminds me of the desert. Which is exactly what he strives to do.
I love warm and inviting furniture, and Lanny creates just that. Plus, anything that reminds me of the desert is awesome. Lanny answered some questions about his work for me.
- How long have you been creating your art? 11 years. I was out in the desert looking at all this burned juniper and thought there should be a second life for these trees. So I cut a few sticks, brought them home, got a book about rustic furniture I made my first juniper chair. Using tools I had and suggestions from the book I was able to create mortise and tenon joinery.
- Why did you choose your particular medium? I am a carpenter by trade but I’ve always liked interesting, twisted pieces of wood I find out in the wild. I love working with my hands and making furniture with simple tools.
- What do you consider your greatest achievement? Getting up in the morning…lol… It makes happy to see people sit in, sit on and enjoy my chairs and benches.
- What awards have you won? I’ve been in art shows and galleries
-
Are you working on something new? My latest projects have been children’s furniture. Chairs, tables, benches, stools. I made a set of 4 chairs and table for a client in Bozeman Montana this month.

I AM SO GLAD TO SEE OUR FRIEND LANNY ‘Jeep” FEATURED IN THIS WEEK’S ARTSY fARTSY TIME. WE FEEL THE SAME ABOUT HIS TALENT AND ART AND HAVE SOME WONDERFUL ART IN OUR HOME HE HAS MADE FOR US.
He recycles from Nature and that’s what we all need to be doing. That way we stay connected to the Earth
Wow, Lanny sure is very talented! His work looks amazing….
I’ve also found a further use for pieces of wood, I use them as chew toys, but I’m not sure that’s very arty! :)
Have a fun day,
Your pal Snoopy :)
Lanny’s work is wonderful! I adore the children’s set. I am crazy about anything made out of wood in a rustic manner like this, wonderful!
Larry’s woodwork is utterly amazing. Are his chairs comfortable to sit in? Anyway, I personally love just about anything that’s made out of wood because it creates a natural atmosphere that radiates warmth and the smell is heavenly.
