The moose are starting to think about mating season. Mostly the bulls are thinking about it, the girls aren’t quite ready.
All the bulls in the area have now stripped their velvet. That’s the first sign that it’s getting to be time. When the bulls are stripping their velvet, they will rub their antlers through bushes to get all the loose stuff off. This guy was using a sagebrush, and ended up with part of it in his antler.
The look on his face was like, Really?! He got rid of it pretty fast.
He was hanging around this mom and baby, pretty much wasting his time with her. She won’t breed till next year.
The lip curl after he had checked her scent.
This is the same bull about a week later. He found a couple of cows that should be ready to mate soon. He is thinking now would be a good time.
How could she say no to that goofy face.
We have had rain for 2 straight days. He was looking pretty soggy and forlorn.
Cheer up buddy, it will happen soon enough.
Amazing pics and funny story. Poor Bull Moose.
teeehee….OH THE FUN! What a funny face, indeed. Nature has a rhythm that I can feel and move to and be happy with. Do you know that a few years ago, a moose was spotted in downtown BOSTON? Right on Newbury St., a busy and fancy strip of shops and restaurants? How this moose ended up there is a mystery!
What beauty you have captured, Mary!
Such absolutely beautiful creatures!

It’s really amazing pictures. You have captured the call of the wild.
As they say, “Nature calls”! Great photos, Mary.
Wow – what fantastic shots! The elks over here are very shy and it’s hard to get up close.
Enjoyed reading the narrative. Remarkable captures of these special creatures. Thank you so much for sharing, Mary! :)
Great shots – how close and what kind of lens?
