Montana’s Best Ghost Towns-Virginia City and Nevada City

It’s easy to explore Montana’s Best Ghost Towns-Virginia City and Nevada City in a single day. With great old buildings, full of great old stuff, it’s the perfect day trip.

We visited 4 years ago, and really enjoyed it. So when we left Washington on Wednesday and started making our way across Montana we decided to stay in Ennis again because it’s close to the two towns. Calling them ghost towns however, is misleading as there are people who live year round in both towns.

Rockaway, Oregon

Rockaway, Oregon

Our friends who live in Albany, Oregon, where we stayed a few days after leaving the Steens, have a little cabin in Rockaway. It’s one of those cute little places that’s been in the family for many, many years and is across the street from the beach. They invited us to stay there when we were done with our time in Newport, and had talked to their neighbor about us parking on an empty lot by their place. It takes us forever to travel, so it was Saturday evening when we arrived. We got settled, and they walked with us to the beach.

Twin Rocks. The iconic view in Rockaway.

Newport, Oregon

Newport, Oregon

Our next stop on the Oregon coast was a campground in Newport, South Beach state park. The Oregon state parks are all so wonderful. I love that the majority of the coast is public land in the form of either a day use state park, or a campground. South Beach is where we stayed one night 3 1/2 years ago when we raced down the coast in January after leaving Vashon, Wa. It was pure luck we were able to get a reservation for 6 nights last week, and it was a great place to stay. We could walk about a half mile to the beach, and there is also a nice bike path that goes to the harbor jetties that we enjoyed riding on too.

Every evening we would walk down to the beach, and usually earlier too, and just have a beach stroll.
