Pretty Skies, and Cute Wildlife

Tales from the Backroad Posted on June 10, 2018 by Mary HoneJune 7, 2018

Pretty Skies, and Cute Wildlife

When we visit the horses, it’s not always just them I get to photograph. Sometimes its also pretty skies, and cute wildlife.

One afternoon we were in the RV, and I looked out to see very young, twin pronghorn antelope running all over everywhere. One of them in particular was racing through the grass, and clearly having a great time. It was one of the cutest, funniest things I’ve seen wildlife do. There was a shallow ditch, and he ran through it, up and over it, and all along the side. Mom pretty much just had to watch.

The other baby enjoyed running too, and pretty soon they were all three going.

Wild Foals in Wild Flowers

Tales from the Backroad Posted on June 3, 2018 by Mary HoneJune 3, 2018

Wild Foals in Wild Flowers

I’m having a sale over on Mary Hone Photography, see the end of this post for details.

I don’t think there could be anything cuter than a wild foal, in wild flowers. On the last morning visiting the horses, I got lucky with just that.

This little one was losing his winter coat, and looked like he had a mask on.

Spring with the Wild Horses

Tales from the Backroad Posted on May 30, 2018 by Mary HoneMay 29, 2018

Spring with the Wild Horses

Spring with the wild horses is the very best time, and we just spent 4 days out there photographing, and hanging out. So you know what you guys are in for in the upcoming blog posts.

Last months trip with the nieces was great, but I knew the grass would be green, the flowers would be out, and more foals would have been born. So we broke our own rule of going anywhere on a holiday weekend and headed out. One reason I wanted to go was to meet up with the 2 women who run the Wild Horse Photography Collective instagram and facebook pages. It was fun to meet them, and photograph the horses.

We got there mid afternoon on Friday, and after getting the RV settled, I headed out to see where the horses were, and to catch up with old horse friends.

Cute new guy.

Spring with the Wild Horses

This little colt is striking. His coloring is gorgeous, and he is so long legged.

Loving momma.

Spring with the Wild Horses

It was windy, and dusty. This little one sought shelter under mom when the wind kicked up.

Spring with the Wild Horses

She is impossibly cute too. She has a mark on her shoulder almost identical to her mom.

Spring with the Wild Horses

There were a couple of new palomino pintos. This one had a hurt leg, and was limping a little bit. Hopefully she will recover.

She was certainly being looked after well.

This is the other palomino pinto. The dark mare is his mom, and the roan is what I call, “The sister wife.” The mares in a band all take part in watching, and raising the foals. It’s fascinating to watch. This band has just these two mares, and the stallion.

I saw Princess, with her little Prince. I hardly recognized her, she has gotten so dark. And that little colt has sure grown in the 6 weeks since I saw him last.

On the other end of that, we have Little Miss Mischief who has gotten quite light colored. Her mane has always been light, but now all of her is getting so impossibly beautiful.

Her cremello mom had a little one just recently too. I quite love the cremello, and it’s nice to see her growing up so healthy, she sure does make beautiful babies. This new one is going to be a knock out too.

The pinto behind the cremello, is her mom. So this is 3 generations.

Then there were these two. The gray foal is was so, so cute! When I first saw her, she was running, and jumping on the big sister.

It was interesting, because every time I saw these two, they were together with the mare who is the mom of the gray filly.

I started to wonder if there was a mom for the palomino. Then finally, I saw her go to a mare and nurse.

The evening is when the magic light happens, and it’s the best time to be out. These two…..the little colt was not going to let the sibling rest.

It’s also when the stallions get wound up.

The dark stallion ran pretty far, just to mix it up with this guy.

Talk about a “Dust up”.

It was another beautiful, and satisfying day with the wild herd.

More to come.  ;-)
