The end of our South Dakota adventure
The end of our South Dakota adventure
After 2300 miles, 11 days, and some beautiful country, we made it full circle back to Utah. It was a lot of driving, and some long days in the truck but we saw some wonderful things. I am in love with the open grass lands of South Dakota, and it was fun to go back to our “home” state. You have to be from somewhere to get a drivers license and all that jazz, and SD is wonderful for fulltimers that way.
Sadly, we only spent 2 nights at out great boondock spot, then we headed into Rapid City. The second evening we were in the Badlands, we took a drive to see what we could see.
This is such a crazy and beautiful landscape.
While we were there, we learned that this area is packed with fossils. At one time, millions of years ago, this area was covered by a giant sea. So there are fossils from that time, and then upward through the millions of years. The visitors center has great information about the fossils they find there.
We found some very alive animals however. There are a few prairie dog towns. These guys crack me up.
The way they throw their heads back to sound the alarm was too funny.
We were thrilled to see a few burrowing owls in the prairie dog town too.
We saw a few bison, two big bulls in particular. They seemed much larger than the bison we see in Wyoming for some reason.
More on these guys tomorrow.
We did some antique shopping in Rapid City, for things to use in our new art idea. So for the next several weeks, we will be busy getting stuff made for the summer art show season. Busy, busy time ahead and I will get some pictures of the new ideas as soon as I can.
I LOVE PRAIRIE DOGS!!!!!!!! And you captured these so beautifully. Oh Mary, the things you must SEE!
I would love to look for fossils there… but it’s also great to watch the living animals… the owl is just beautiful…

A trip of a lifetime , Mary…AWESOME!…:)JP
Gorgeous scenery. Love that last shot!
Mary! HI THERE! Thank you for visiting my pink world today!!!
I LOVE prairie dogs, they’re adorable! And I’m sure you could have guessed that I also love fossil hunting – we have a brook in my town that used to be a much bigger river that led straight to the Atlantic Ocean millions of years ago. So there are pre-historic fossils there that are so amazing – mostly saltwater creatures, but also a few landlubber dinosaur bones have been found there. We dig fossils out of the brook bed, but after a good rain, fossils are literally popping out of the high dirt walls bordering the brook. It’s a blast going there!
