This funny horse thinks he’s a dog
Hands down, this was the funniest thing I’ve seen a wild horse do. This funny horse thinks he’s a dog, and even had a stick to play with.
So much of wildlife photography, of any kind, is right place right time. A perfect example was the baby pronghorn antelope in yesterday’s post. And, this horse playing with a big stick.
He would grab it, then drop it, then pick it up again.
Then he started walking around with it. Clearly, it was “his” stick and he was taking it with him.
Then another stallion came over to see what was going on. I think maybe he thought he was missing out on something.
Pretty soon, he dropped the stick and went on his merry way. I was really glad I was there at the right place, and the right time to capture it.
That evening when I went to shoot the golden light, the full moon came out.
Sadly, I had very little time of good light, and full moon. I still like this photo though.
This photo gives you an idea of the area these guys are in. The whole herd is about 100 horses, so this is just a portion.
Since we were only spending one night, we went the next morning to find the herd again. I of course knew were they had been at sundown, so we went there first. No horses. We drove ALL over. All the usual places they can be, places we thought they might be. Nothing. How 100 horses vanish is beyond me.
I’ll find them next time!
And FYI, I started another Instagram account that is all wild horses, all the time. I have soooooo many photos from the past couple years that I thought it would be fun to have a place just for them. So join me at WildMustangsForever.
WHAT A CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went to a farm last year and I laughed so hard as I watched this horse sucking on a fence post. He would NOT stop, and it looked as if he was eating a popsicle! Oh, this guy is darling, with his stick. LOVE LOVE LOVE. And, your moon shot, Mary, fascinating! I never see the moon that large…what’s up with that? Location? Stunning photo. Perfection!
I wonder how old that horse was that was playing with the stick? I bet it was still fairly young. Fun to see something so silly.
how funny! we have a horse-dog here too, it always comes when I call Phenny back. the horse is there with the first call… Phenny needs some more… seems the horse is the better dog :o)
How adorable. I love both your moon shots. Gorgeous!
How cool to be around when something uncommon happens!
Thanks for sharing the encounter :-)
That’s great! I bet he was a lot of fun to watch! Thanks for sharing him with us! Your moon shots are amazing, too!
They have such unique and different personalities. I can see why you enjoy them so much.
Hello, that is funny to see a horse playing with a stick! Love the horse and moon shots! Great captures! Have a happy day and new week!
That is so cute. I still remember – years later – an old issue of National Geographic about “Animals at Play” – it was awesome and had a lot of great photos of animals playing.
