Wild Horse Week-Fighting Stallions
Wild Horse Week-Fighting Stallions
When you think of wild horses, fighting stallions is the first thing that comes to mind. I know when I first saw stallions fighting, it was thrilling. Such raw, wild, untamed power.
First, there is a lot of posturing. They will sometimes stand with their heads down, right next to each other.
Then they show their stuff. Sometimes there is a lot of physical contact, sometimes it’s more for show.
Most all the stallions have scars from being kicked, or bitten.
These two were only a little serious about it all.
I took a lot of photos of these two. It makes for a fun series of shots.
You can see battle scars on the brown horse.
These next two had just come from the watering hole in the morning. They are generally more wound up then, and fights are bound to happen.
The mares will sometimes kick at the stallions too. If a mare is not ready to breed, she will let the stallion know under no uncertain terms. The little guys like to play fight, it’s all part of the learning process. This one kept biting and tugging on the other ones mane.
And these cute guys too.
It’s a rough and tumble world for a wild horse.
I always enjoy watching the group dynamics of a herd. Nice action shots!
Magnificent.
And all that power, gorgeousness and grace out there in the wild where only a few folks like you will even see it. That is what amazes me about nature. It does its beautiful thing even if no one is there to watch. GORGEOUS, MARY!!!
they are such wonderful animals…. and your photos are wonderful too… I love the effects of the light on their skin… and the well defined muscles…
It is the wild west…at least their fighting is beautiful to watch, not like the human gun fights.
It’s amazing how none of the other horses are in the least bit interested when two are fighting right in their midst. And I love all those flying manes!
Awesome photos of their actions!
Gorgeous shots! Love the playful horses.
Wow. Another series of great shots! My faves are the little ones – love the biting/tugging at the mane. Like pulling someone’s pigtails in school.
And only the strong survive…beauty shots, Mary!…:)JP
They are so interesting to watch!! Beautiful!
